East Midlands

Staff Grade 5
Full Time
Operational Delivery
Flooding represents a crucial challenge both now and into the future as the impacts of climate change become apparent. We need individuals who want to play a key role in making the East Midlands a greener, more resilient and a better place to live and work. We are looking for a Field Team Leader to lead and manage our Draycott Field Operations teams.

You will be responsible for protecting people and the environment by maintaining and operating our flood defence assets and responding to incidents. You will manage large budgets and lead large teams in a high-risk environment. You will ensure operatives are trained and competent and have the right tools/equipment to enable them to support and respond to an incident. Specifically, you will:

● Provide leadership and direction to assist in the assurance of our overall asset management and emergency response services.
● Maintain a close overview on the health, safety and wellbeing of the team due to the high-risk nature of field work; the requirement to work in or near a watercourse/coast and to regularly operate plant and other specialist equipment.
● Ensure the delivery of our maintenance programmes to support our asset management strategy and meet the principles of whole life-cycle asset management.
● Ensure their team have the capabilities, training and experience necessary to respond professionally during flooding and environmental incidents to meet our aspiration to be recognised as a world class asset and incident management service.

Incident response remains a top priority for the Environment Agency. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The Area Operations Teams are motivated, vibrant and successful, offering a great place to work. They have a pivotal role in delivering our strategic goal of ‘assets operate when required’; our ambition to deliver a world class asset management service; and the planning and delivery of revenue maintenance activities. We maintain an extensive range of flood defence assets and as part of our ambition to be lead asset managers we have achieved ISO55001.

● Experience of leading a team and/or managing construction/maintenance activities and good understanding of H&S legislation.
● Ability to lead people and provide clear direction, instruction and guidance through effective performance management.
● Ability to recognise the strengths, vulnerabilities and motivations of others and develop key skills.
● Ability to resource, prioritise and deliver a work programme. Identifying the required competencies/skills and plant/equipment needed to deliver activities in line with our SHEW Code of Practice and relevant OIs.
● Computer literate. Competent using IT devices, such as an iPad, and willing to learn our in-house systems.

● Commercial acumen and knowledge of our supply chain to assist in the delivery of our work programmes is beneficial.
● A relevant degree (or similar) and specialist training such as National Examination Board of Safety Health (NEBOSH) and/or Institute of Asset Management Certificate (IAM) is beneficial.
We are committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. Everyone starting in a role will be welcomed into the team and given the training and support needed. As part of your comprehensive induction, you will be provided with all the equipment required for your role.

We offer an extensive range of employee benefits and opportunities to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

For any questions relating to this role, please contact: Gretchen Moeser or Will Evans.

Interviews are scheduled to occur on in early November and may include these additional competencies: Achieves Results, Delivers Results through Others, and Focuses on Efficiency, Diversity, and Innovation and Quality.
