Water resources are under pressure. We need someone to help manage them. Become a hydrologist at the Environment Agency and you will take on the challenge of providing an integrated hydrology service to those who need it, requiring both technical and operational expertise. Your responsibilities will be varied and always rewarding. Technically, you’ll work on low flow analysis, modelling and forecasting flows, producing weekly and monthly water situation reports, responding to consultations on abstraction license and hydropower scheme applications, and being involved in drought management. Operationally, you’ll manage water transfer schemes, making decisions on whether to transfer water and for how long. Key to both are building relationships with our stakeholders who are affected by how water resources is managed in this part of the world.

Joining the Hydrology & Operations Team at our Peterborough office, you’ll play an important role ensuring that water is effectively managed for the needs of users and the environment. Whilst the team covers a large area you will be focussing on Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, providing an integrated hydrology service to our customers.
The Hydrology and Operations team is a pan-Area team covering Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire Area and the upper part of East Anglia Area, providing an integrated hydrology service to our internal and external customers, incorporating technical and operational expertise on any aspect of water resource hydrology, ensuring water is better managed for the needs of users and the environment, and provide expert advice to support incidents.
You’ll ideally have a relevant scientific degree (e.g. geography, environmental science or civil engineering) and an understanding of hydrological techniques and concepts (e.g. hydrological modelling and processes). Combining an analytical mind with great people skills, you’ll be comfortable using data to solve problems and achieve outcomes, and be able to explain your decisions to wide-ranging stakeholders. You’ll be happy to hit the ground running and manage your own workload, as you receive the support and training you require. As you will be building relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, you will be able demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively.
