We are the Environment Agency, a non-departmental public body, established in 1995 and sponsored by the United Kingdom government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), with responsibilities relating to the protection and enhancement of the environment in England.

We protect and improve the environment. We look after land quality, promote sustainable land management and help protect and enhance wildlife habitats. We also work closely with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations.

The deliberate mis-description of waste has been highlighted as a serious issue across the country. It diverts waste away from legitimate waste management and has great potential to damage and pollute the environment. Criminal operators are committing fraud in order to avoid paying the true cost of handling and disposing of hazardous waste. As a Mis-description of Waste Officer it will be your role to identify and investigate instances of waste mis-description, and work closely with Waste Regulation and Enforcement officers to tackle this aspect of waste crime.
In our frontline Waste Regulation teams you'll help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment. You'll play an important role tackling environmental crime by identifying, preventing and disrupting waste crime, focussing your attention on mis-description of waste.

Sometimes we will have to take tough action to achieve these aims. you may also be required to give evidence in a court of law.

The job is extremely varied, vital and at times challenging.
You’ll have some experience of regulation or enforcement within the waste industry. Ideally understanding the motivations around waste crime and the mis-description of waste. Knowledge of Duty of Care and Hazardous waste regulations would be a great start.

You’ll be comfortable reviewing technical data and potentially laboratory reports to evidence if offences have occurred. You may be required to present the findings to a Court.

Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment and using regulation to make a real difference, even if this sometimes means dealing with confrontation.

What’s important is you demonstrate the right behaviours to join our team. We are looking for people who:

• Are organised
• Can handle confrontation
• Are confident
• Can adapt their communication style
• Can build positive relationships
• Are a team player
• Are accurate and detailed
• Enjoy working outside
• Are passionate about the environment
The role requires a combination of desk-based and field-based work. You will be stationed within Waste Regulation but will also work closely with officers in the Enforcement
