We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Planning Advisor to join our NNB Programme Team. The successful candidate will work across the multiple projects that sit under the NNB programme, including Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. You’ll provide advice and leadership on infrastructure planning regime matters. You’ll be key to developing and shaping innovative approaches to enable integrated, cross-regime, and one-business solutions. This is an excellent opportunity to help contribute to the UK’s net zero target, the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis.

The role provides opportunity to support our response to Government’s development of the new National Nuclear Policy Statement.

You will provide strategic operational support to Area project teams to enable delivery of environmental outcomes through the planning system, including Development Consent Order applications and discharge of requirements. In addition, you’ll also provide direction and support on the planning and permitting interface.

You’ll work with Area and National Teams, Natural England, the Marine Management Organisation, and the Office for Nuclear Regulation. There will be direct engagement with industry to influence their proposals to help achieve high standards of environmental protection.
The NNB Programme Team helps deliver the Environment Agency’s contribution to Government’s net zero target through decarbonising the economy.

We are a small, nationally dispersed team of 10 people and are part of the Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate.

In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources.
We are looking for a self-motivated and dynamic individual with an excellent record of achieving results both individually and through team working. You’ll have an in-depth knowledge of the planning regime and in how we deliver advice to planning authorities and our partners. You should be suitably qualified and experienced to confidently represent the Environment Agency. Holding relevant professional qualifications and/or membership of a professional body, while not essential, would be desirable.

Experience of coordinating and working with technical staff on major national infrastructure projects or local infrastructure developments is essential, as is the ability to reach your own decisions and provide sound recommendations to decision makers.

You will have good influencing skills and the ability to effectively work with industry and partner organisations.
The Environment Agency utilise a hybrid working model, which provides flexibility in how and when you work. You will be office based with the option to incorporate home working; this role may also require some occasional national travel.

The Environment Agency is a Category 1 responder and so responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. All staff will have the option to have an incident role. This may attract an additional payment and full training and support will be provided. There are many roles to choose from, dependent on your circumstances.
