It’s an exciting time to be involved in planning England’s water resources. Last year’s drought remains at the forefront of people’s minds, and our water supply is under continuing pressure. We are also in the process of refreshing our National Framework for Water Resources to ensure our future water supply is secure. In this post you will be crucial to its success.

First released in March 2020, the framework broke ground in planning for the nation’s water resources to be more resilient to climate change, droughts, and population growth alongside a new approach to enhancing the environment. Now we want to build on these achievements and look at new evidence to improve water resources resilience across sectors.

Your role will be to support activities to review and refresh the National Framework for Water Resources. This will involve working closely with a range of internal and external stakeholders, including Defra, Ofwat, RAPID, Natural England, plus representatives from Water Companies and the energy and agricultural sectors.
You will be part of the Water Resources Resilience team, which has recently formed to lead on the National Framework for Water Resources and work across the agriculture and energy sectors to improve resilience.

We are in the Environment and Business directorate, alongside other water management and investment teams.
We welcome applications from those with a good understanding of water resources, but this would also be an opportunity to learn for those outside the field. We would be very interested in hearing from you if you have some or all of the following:

• the ability to manage and deliver projects and programmes
• experience of environmental regulation and planning, particularly water resources such as licensing, environmental regulation, or sustainable abstraction
• experience in aiding reviews of statutory plans or similar
• ability to build and maintain good relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• a track record of achieving results

The team is dispersed, and the successful candidate must be able to work on their own initiative while maintaining effective communication with colleagues.
This role is fixed term for 24 months.

Interviews will be held remotely via MS Teams in June 2023.

We are fully committed to being a diverse and inclusive organisation reflecting the communities we serve.
