As the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Fisheries & the Natural Environment you’ll provide the direction to our fisheries, biodiversity and geomorphology strategy. You will work with a range of partners in voluntary and statutory organisations which will enable these organisations to achieve their goals, while ensuring the Environment Agency meets its objectives, too.

Setting the strategic direction, you’ll hold the power to significantly influence the future direction of the Environment Agency’s contribution to the protection and improvement of the natural environment. Making sure we maintain strong relationships with our partners is essential. A strong, direct leader, you’ll listen and acknowledge concerns they may have in a sensitive manner– but will be confident in your ability to stand firm on what you feel is right. As well as developing advice and guidance for external partners, you’ll also develop strategies for maximising income - ensuring efficient spend to deliver objectives and outcomes. The decisions you make will create and engender change within the Environment Agency and you’ll play an essential role in helping us prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. This is an incredible opportunity to make your mark, not only on our organisation, but on the natural environment.
Representing and leading Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment teams and sitting on the Water, Land and Biodiversity Leadership Team, the post holder will contribute to the strategic leadership of the whole Environment Agency. All executive managers in the Environment Agency work together to lead and deliver strategic management of the business, especially during floods and other environmental incidents. This requires refined cross-team networking and delivery.
First and foremost, you’ll be an enthusiastic person who’s ready for this challenge; eager to drive innovative strategies and deliver positive outcomes for the environment we all live in.
Professional knowledge and experience of working in the natural environment, particularly fisheries, is essential and working with government is also desirable. You’ll need to have significant experience leading people and partnership delivery and have some technical knowledge of environmental legislation and the Environment Agency. Hugely influential, you’ll be comfortable dealing with external stakeholders of all levels – and have the confidence to challenge and push forward your ideas. Naturally, you’ll share our passion for protecting and improving the environment – and you’ll have the drive and determination to make sure it happens.
