In the face of the climate and nature emergency, our role is to help make people and communities resilient to a future with more frequent and more extreme flooding.

We are one of the largest flood defence projects in the country, looking to invest over a hundred million pounds to better protect more than 10,000 homes, businesses, and significant infrastructure from flooding, erosion and the climate emergency.

We are looking for a Project Officer to work with our senior project leads in; driving the project forward and working with our stakeholders and partners to help keep them informed and unlock our wider aspirations.

You’ll be heavily involved in the planning and organising of activities under the guidance of our senior leads with opportunities to own your own pieces of work if you’re looking for a role which can stretch your skills.

The project team is mainly located in our Worthing office, but some travel (once a week on average) to the Pevensey and Eastbourne area is needed, with the occasional evening meeting. All travel to places away from our main office is covered by our expense policy and we offer a great flexible working scheme.

We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities and our environment. As an organisation we strive to reflect the communities we serve and continue to develop diversity throughout our workforce. We welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of race, sexual orientation or religion.

We support flexible working hours and practices. We offer an extensive range of employee benefits and encourage you to keep developing your skills and professional knowledge throughout your career.
You’ll be part of a wider team made up of project managers, engineers as well as environmental and engagement experts. Our part focuses on engagement, ensuring the programme is on track and that we deliver a legacy to be proud of.
We’re passionate about being a high performing team but also make sure our work life balance is right. You’ll be given a level of flexible working that’s not common in most workplaces.
We are looking for someone who:
- Takes a proactive approach to managing a varied workload and can work with team members to take decisions and prioritise
- Is a good communicator, works well both independently and in a team, and can build relationships with colleagues
- Has strong organisation and time management skills, and the ability to manage different tools and programmes
- Takes an active role in team discussions

Experience or qualifications in a relevant discipline such as geography, environment, flood risk, planning, engagement, project or programme management would be beneficial, but not essential.

You must hold a full driving licence or be able to demonstrate how you could perform this role fully without one.
Responding to incidents is also a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

If you'd like more information please get in touch with nick.gray@environment-agency.gov.uk

Interviews will be held face to face in the Eastbourne area in late May.
