The Environment Agency exists to create a better place for people and wildlife. Tackling the climate emergency underpins everything we do. We reduce the risk of flooding, regulate major industry, advise on sustainable development and farming, improve water quality, and manage water resources.

Every day across the organisation, we make decisions about how to effectively manage flood, drought risk and water quality based on the reliable and trusted evidence provided by our environmental monitoring programmes. Have you ever wondered where that evidence actually comes from?

These teams are at the forefront of gathering the right evidence to the right specification and on time, in order to make key decisions.

We are looking for two high performing individuals with impressive leadership experience to lead the Monitoring Survey and Field teams, gathering the evidence base that enables us and others to make good environmental decisions.

You will lead and empower the teams to deliver efficient and effectives services, building a strong culture of continuous improvement and innovation, encouraging and supporting difference in all its forms and supporting people to grow/develop and be their best. You will be forward thinking in driving consistency, managing change and maintaining effective relationships.
You will be part of the National Monitoring Leadership team. The department is made up of seven teams, working together to lead approx. 500 people. The Survey and Field teams are two of these teams delivering environmental monitoring and survey work to customer lead specifications. Demonstrating value for money, operating a consistent, effective, and flexible service. We are passionate about the people in our team, striving to make National Monitoring a great place to work.
You will be an experienced leader; well-organised and able to have a flexible style and approach to leading a team. A strong role model for your people, ensuring their health, safety, and wellbeing, encouraging diversity, developing the culture and investing in their development.

You will need to be comfortable working across the department, getting the best out of people and delivering outcomes via people you don’t directly line manage. You’ll have experience of the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You will have experience of leading change, influencing senior decision-makers, working with a wide range of customers to understand their needs and a proven track record of delivery as well as continual improvement. You will have a business-like approach and good attention to detail with a focus on delivery, quality and innovation. You’ll have excellent communications skills, good judgement, and be a great collaborator and facilitator.
