We are the Environment Agency. We create better places for people, wildlife and the environment. We improve and protect the quality of our air, land and water by tackling pollution. We work with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations and believe a healthy and diverse environment enhances people’s lives and contributes to sustainable and resilient economic growth.

This is an exciting opportunity within the Environment Agency’s Air Quality Modelling and Assessment Unit (AQMAU). As a technical officer you will work in a team of other professionals to review and interpret air quality assessments using predictive modelling software.

This will include carrying out complex modelling studies, developing software tools and providing advice and training to operational colleagues. You’ll also have the opportunity to get involved in incident response.
The AQMAU team provides the Environment Agency’s national air dispersion and noise modelling expertise. We provide regulatory advice to support permitting, compliance and major incidents, helping protect the local population and ecological sites from regulated industrial emissions. The work we do impacts on permitting decisions and how a site can legally operate.
We’re seeking a highly numerate individual to work in the field of air quality modelling. You will have:
• A degree or equivalent in a science or engineering subject such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Meteorology, Engineering.
• A proven ability to analyse data and solve problems to make decisions.
• Strong interpersonal and team-working skills.
• Excellent customer focus.
• Ideally some experience in air quality or working in a regulated industry.

You’ll be comfortable managing your own work and communicating complex technical issues effectively.
The posts can be based in any Environment Agency office although we offer hybrid working.

For further information about any of these roles please contact Nick Bettinson (07770 847712; nicholas.bettinson@environment-agency.gov.uk) or Sofia Girnary (07825 113939; sofia.girnary@environment-agency.gov.uk).

We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible and welcome applications from all sections of the community wishing to join an organisation which values everyone.
