You will have an overview of the areas high risk / persistently poor performing (DEF) permitted sites and you will be responsible for driving improvements at those sites both directly and by supporting others.

You will work closely with the Department's other Waste Regulatory Specialists to ensure a consistent approach and effective strategic leadership of cross cutting issues.

Using an intelligence led approach you will need to be able to horizon scan and identify future potential issues and help officers take action to implement solutions to stop or minimise the risks. This will include taking the leading with respect to regulatory advice.

You will work closely with the teams and act as a trouble shooter and provide the link between officers, national staff and local contacts.

The ability to coach and mentor staff within the waste teams is essential, this will include the production of coaching plans for individuals where appropriate.

You will be expected to be self-motivated and plan and monitor your workload to fit around the area priorities.
The North East Areas Waste and Enforcement Department regulates the waste industry from the Scottish borders down to Teesside. Waste Team work involves inspections, investigations and enforcement on permitted sites, exempt activities and illegal waste operations.
We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic and self-motivated with a commitment to delivering technical leadership for the area on waste regulation.

You must have a good knowledge of the waste industry and experience / skills in modern waste regulation and relevant legislation.

You must have excellent inter-person and communication skills with a passion for helping others. You will help others via on the job technical training, coaching, providing site specific advice and guidance and delivering appropriate customer driven support.

You must be able to carry out complex tasks following existing procedures but with an element of problem solving and initiative where required to meet local needs.

Chartered membership of a relevant Institution or Practicing Environmental Regulator accreditation is expected.
