We are delighted to offer this permanent Water Quality Marine lead Senior Advisor role, within in our national Environment and Business directorate.

We are looking for a motivated, technical Senior Advisor who has good experience of working on marine and water quality issues, along with wider regulatory, policy and climate change awareness.

The role needs to have an understanding of the risk assessment process for the marine environment, ideally with some awareness of permitting and compliance under the Environmental Permitting Regulations (2016).

The successful candidate will have or need to develop knowledge of WFD, Habitats and regulatory requirements for the marine environment.

As capacity allows, the role will work to address areas of marine policy and guidance, such as climate change, thermal limits and permitting policy, whilst developing links with other teams such as Estuaries & Coasts and colleagues working on water quality modelling and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

The role will:

- Develop and support the Environment Agency’s business and regulatory positions as well as constructively engage with external stakeholders and operators to achieve appropriate regulatory outcomes that protect the environment and work to achieve our strategic ambitions.

- Provide a focal point on policy positions, technical guidance and advice, and develop strong links with the wider business, engaging with internal and external partners, stakeholders and customers as well as operational colleagues.

- Set the business direction on marine water quality policy.
The successful candidate will work in the Water Quality Permitting and Compliance team within Water Land and Biodiversity, part of the Environment and Business directorate.

The team provide a specialist water quality permitting and compliance service to the business, ensuring sustainable and resilient permitting and compliance for the future.

Some limited travel will be required such as to London and Birmingham, with occasional overnight stays.

The team is dispersed throughout the country.
Educated to degree level or equivalent, you will:

-Have good knowledge of water quality legislation, regulation, and discharge assessment in the coastal and estuarine environment, including an understanding of the risk assessment process for the marine environment with some knowledge of physical oceanography.

-Have experience of writing guidance documents and at least some understanding of water discharge activity permitting, and our relevant policies and permitting framework.

-Have adaptive communication skills, being able to engage and explain complex issues with a range of audiences, rationalise complexity and problem solve.

- Achieve results and can work within a wider regulatory context to produce policy and guidance to enable good and effective environmental regulation and protection, in a timely manner to required standards.

-Be self-motivated, and able to work independently with a ‘can do’ attitude to achieve results, engage with technical and regulatory colleagues as well as lead work delivering through others.
