The Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology (FBG) team are looking for a Technical Specialist to lead on our work with eels across Essex, Norfolk, and Suffolk.

Having a good working knowledge of the Eels Regulations as well as the ecology of eel is critical to this role. The successful candidate will provide technical support, advice and guidance on eel passage and screening issues and well as regulatory requirements to internal and external customers.

The role will provide an opportunity for you to develop your technical leadership skills, and you will have opportunities to manage and provide specialist input into a range of projects.

You will represent the area at a national level, reporting performance as required and disseminating information to ensure teams are kept up to date. You will take responsibility for specific and high-profile areas of work, anticipate the issues, and ensure decisions are made on sound technical grounds.

This role is as much about working with people as it is about working with nature. You will proactively engage staff across the business, communicating with a diverse range of colleagues internally and externally, to successfully build trusted networks and strong partnerships, to maximise delivery.

You will keep up to date on changing legislation and best practice to inform internal priorities and direction.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

You will be based in our Norfolk team, but the role will work across the area so can be based in Norfolk, Suffolk, or Essex.
The FBG team covers a diverse geographical area from the North Norfolk coast to the Thames, encompassing a fantastic coastline, the beautiful Norfolk Broads, and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

We work collaboratively internally and with statutory bodies, NGOs, anglers, local partnerships, and landowners. The team provides technical advice and support to ensure our own activities meet the highest environmental standards and we make a positive difference tackling the biodiversity and climate crisis.
You will have
• confidence in offering technical support around eel passage and screening
• a broad knowledge of the Eels Regulations 2009 with the ability to lead on technical advice and guidance
• an understanding of the ecology of eels
• an understanding of the role the Environment Agency has in relation to eel regulation and protection
• the ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of audiences
• a proven track record of persuading and influencing others

The ability to communicate, influence and work collaboratively within a dispersed team is essential. You will lead technical discussions including teams from across the area.

Ideally, you will have experience and skills in the following:
• database and spreadsheet management
• technical report writing
• completing work to time and with a clear customer focus
• technical leadership and coaching others
