We are seeking a motivated team member to join the Groundwater Resources and Hydrology team in Thames Area. We are looking for a Hydrogeologist who will work primarily on water resources to ensure effective management and protection of groundwater in Thames. By carrying out analysis and interpretation of data you will be supporting operational decisions and environmental regulation. This includes:
• advising on the impacts of abstraction and development;
• undertaking groundwater resource and pump test assessments;
• advising on the groundwater extremes of drought and groundwater flooding;
• delivery of our Water Framework Directive measures and investigations;
• working with water companies on restoring sustainable abstraction projects;
• management of our groundwater level network.
The role will be based in either Red Kite House, Wallingford or Kings Meadow House, Reading. If you choose to be based in Kings Meadow House, please note that regular attendance at Red Kite House will be expected, for meetings, training and mentoring purposes.
The Environment Agency operates at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure there is enough water for people and wildlife.
The team’s Hydrogeologists and hydrologists provide technical expertise and advice on a range of water resource management projects including Water Framework Directive, Catchment Abstraction Management Strategies, Restoring Sustainable Abstraction programme and determining water resources permits such as section 32 consents and abstraction licences.
You’ll have a relevant degree or equivalent, ideally a further degree in hydrogeology or related subject and be able to demonstrate a strong water resources background. You'll also be a natural and enthusiastic communicator who can present convincing verbal and written arguments and have a practical common sense approach to problem solving. Good computer skills are essential, including the use of spreadsheets, databases and ArcGIS. You will also need to carry out site visits and travel between offices, so you will need a full UK driving licence.
