In this role you will advise on a wide range of general commercial matters such as public procurement, dispute resolution, intellectual property, construction agreements, supply agreements, debt recovery, externally funded projects and Carbon Net Zero and Biodiversity Net Gain projects. You will also provide commercial law support to lawyers in other Legal and Audit Services teams. You will be helping to deliver the Environment Agency’s Action Plan (EA2025 creating a better place) and the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan. You will need to work with external public, private and third sector partners as well as engaging with lawyers in the Government Legal Department and the wider public and private sectors and to provide sensible, practical, accurate, timely and risk-based advice. You will have a varied, high quality, interesting and challenging caseload, and ensure that services are provided in a client-focused manner. There are currently six lawyers in the commercial law team. While currently carrying out a hybrid mix of home and office working the team are based in Birmingham, Bristol and Exeter. The team undertakes work for a wide range of clients. One member of the team works part-time. Candidates seeking flexible working, including job share are welcome.
• Candidates will need to have an excellent track record of handling complex legal and technical issues, including advising on a wide range of commercial matters.
• Experience of the following would be an advantage: Civil litigation, procurement law, construction law, intellectual property law and public law.
• Candidates must have a willingness and aptitude to rapidly get up to speed on new legal issues, including the confidence and experience to assimilate a new area of commercial or other area of law quickly.
• Candidates must have the ability to write clear detailed legal briefings for use at director/board/government level, and to compose correspondence in response to challenging external questions.
• Candidates must have the ability through experience to advise managers, officers and lawyers upon the direction and conduct of casework.
• Candidates must be capable of influencing and persuading a wide range of people up to organisational leaders.

Current Practising Certificate
