Crime in the waste sector has significant environmental and economic impacts – estimated to be up to £1billion per year. There has been a significant increase in organised and large scale waste crime as existing criminal groups enter the industry. They engage in large-scale fraud, threaten and intimidate legitimate competitors, disregard environmental regulations, and feed an illegal economy that can draw on modern slavery.

Following an independent review the Environment Agency is joining with other law enforcement agencies including the Police, HMRC, Border Force, National Crime Agency, SEPA and Natural Resources Wales to set up a collaborative Unit to work in partnership to tackle serious and organised crime in the UK waste sector.

This role offers a unique and exciting opportunity to make a step change in tackling serious and organised crime in the waste sector and protect the environment, communities and legitimate business. You will have a pivotal role leading the new Joint Unit for Waste Crime - initially responsible for setting up the Unit, then ensuring its effective operation.
