Tracking the UK’s 200 million tonnes of waste – where it comes from, where it goes to, and what is done to it, is vital to maximising resource efficiency and preventing waste crime.

Improved systems and data are the fundamental change required to improve regulation, waste management, policy and economic growth. This project will transform waste tracking across the waste industry, and your work will be pivotal in achieving a successful integration into both regulation and industry.

The project will be led by a core Defra team and involve all four of the UK’s environment agencies. Representing the Environment Agency, you will work alongside this multi-agency team to bring this technology to reality by providing waste data expertise – how data is used and needed by the Environment Agency and Defra for effective future waste regulation and policy.

You will ensure that we understand, articulate and define the data requirements of the Business; ensure that the data aspects of the new waste tracking project service fit in with our organisation’s needs; and review, align and streamline our waste data business, to provide a solution which is simple and effective for regulators and business users alike.
The Waste Regulation team sits within the Environment and Business directorate and sets the strategic direction of waste regulation within England. We are currently in an exciting time where there are several new initiatives from government as well as our own aspirations around waste.
You’ll have broad knowledge of the waste industry, in particular hazardous waste, duty of care and environmental permitting regulation. You’ll have experience interpreting business needs to ensure new systems or processes can meet requirements. You’ll appreciate how and why:
• regulators capture waste data
• waste data interrelates
• waste data is interpreted to influence regulation and policy

We work closely with local government, Defra, waste companies, trade bodies and consultants. Experience working with or for one of these is very transferrable into our organisation.

You will need to deliver results through others. You will be a capable communicator, skilled at procuring and rationalising information, effective at influencing and persuading, and have a strong customer and partner focus. You will use these skills and your understanding of waste regulation to shape how the project progresses.
