We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Permitting Officer to join our Water Quality Permitting team in Exeter.

You will assess the impact on the environment of permit applications from external customers that can range in size from individual houses to large water companies, ultimately deciding whether the impact on the environment of the proposal is acceptable. With support from colleagues and established guidance you will carry out technical assessments in line with Environment Agency, DEFRA and European regulatory obligations. The legally robust permits that you produce will provide us with an important tool for delivering our duties as an effective environmental regulator.

You will need to be comfortable with managing a large and varied workload and speaking to internal and external customers. As part of a National service you will also be flexible to help support other teams within the service when required.
The Water Quality team regulates the wastewater industry. We determine discharge applications, from small scale domestic systems to large wastewater treatment works. We are also responsible for reviewing & implementing the requirements of each water company 5 year Asset Management Programme.
You'll need to be able to demonstrate the following capabilities:
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to provide an exceptional service to a wide range of customers
• Working effectively as part of a team to achieve results
• Managing a varied portfolio of work
• Good time and record management to ensure delivery within tight deadlines
• Some understanding of environmental issues relevant to water activities
• Use of IT systems, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint

Experience in Environment Management and the permitting process would be desirable, but is not essential.
