Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. We ensure people can enjoy the water environment through angling and navigation. We look after land quality, promote sustainable land management and help protect and enhance wildlife habitats, by working closely with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations.
These roles are extremely varied and draw upon a range of transferrable and specialist skills. Working with other teams and organisations, you can expect to be involved in any of the following:
• Digitalise our abstraction licenses, permitting of Water Resources activities and delivering Abstraction Reform,
• Assessing applications for environmental permits across the country,
• Carrying out technical assessments, communicating with customers, other environmental bodies and occasional site visits,
• Issuing permits in line with legislation and guidance, ensuring the environment is protected,
• Tackling abstraction from rivers, waterways and farms across a range of urban and rural sites,
• Collection, analysis and interpretation of data,
• Working closely with communities, residents and businesses.
This is a unique time to join the Environment Agency to improve access to water for abstractors, and play a key role responding to mitigating the impacts of prolonged dry weather, whilst protecting the environment. The response requires a multiple team approach with a focus on water quality, agriculture and water resources.
Teams included have responsibilities involving working outdoors and indoors and responding to environmental emergencies and incidents. See the candidate pack for team types.
You’ll ideally have exposure to a regulatory, enforcement or customer-focused roles. Perhaps you are used to managing multiple deadlines?

What’s important is that you have an interest in the environmental sector and are keen to protect the environment through regulating potentially damaging activities, even though this may mean dealing with complex and difficult situations.

Whatever your background, you must be keen to help manage water resources, maximising access to water whilst ensuring the environment is protected.

Whilst water resources experience would be an advantage, the key skills we’re seeking are:

* organised and able to manage your workload
* adapt your communication style to suit others
* integrate into a team
* IT literate
* record information correctly
* enjoy working outdoors and office environments
* willing to learn about environmental regulations and legal documents
