We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to work as part of a team that engages with and influences local planning authorities, planning decision makers and developers to secure the best possible environmental outcomes.

As Planning Specialist you’ll be an expert advisor on planning issues, taking and creating opportunities to achieve sustainable economic prosperity that protects and enhances our environment.

Your work will involve:

•Providing technical leadership, expertise and guidance, primarily to Sustainable Places, but also other internal consultees involved in the planning process, ensuring the best environmental outcomes are achieved.
•Working with a high degree of collaboration, using effective written & spoken communication skills to influencing customers, build strong partnerships and networks internally and externally;
•Leading on the team’s most high profile work areas;
•Training and coaching others to equip them with the knowledge and skills to resolve local issues, ensuring decisions are made on sound technical grounds and are in line with local and national guidance;
•Leading / participating in local/ national projects and working groups to achieve integrated solutions that progress effective change and improvement;
•Supporting the Team Leader in leading and managing the team and issues, taking ownership of improvement actions.
Our Sustainable Places team manages the Environment Agency’s input into development, growth and planning policy, working with councils, developers and strategic partners. Yorkshire is diverse in terms of environmental issues, creating exciting opportunities and work load challenges. You’ll join a great team of 12 with a range of experience (based in Leeds and York) and you’ll have an interesting and diverse workload with the opportunity to make the most of your skills and abilities.
We are looking for someone who has:

•Effective leadership, influencing and negotiation skills, engaging with internal and external networks.
•Excellent customer services skills and be a great communicator to a wide range of audiences.
•A proven flexible, positive approach and a proven ability to achieve results.
•An ability to effectively train and coach others.
•An awareness and understanding of the political framework and internal national context we work within
•Extensive knowledge of the planning system/relevant legislation particularly Local Plans/supporting evidence; development management; relevant procedures;
•Adaptability to change/new ways of working to improve efficiency & productivity.
•Project management skills with ability to work flexibly responding to changing demands in a high workload, high pressure environment

Qualified to at least degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.

Membership or demonstration of progression towards membership of a relevant professional membership is desirable but not essential.

A full driving licence is desirable.
