We are looking for a professional individual with experience of different industrial sectors to regulate Installations under the Environmental Permitting Regulations. You will assess permit compliance and operator ability to prevent pollution and optimise use of resources to secure best practice, continuous improvement and environmental outcomes,. The role will require you to use of a wide range of regulatory and enforcement tools.

Comprehensive technical skills are desirable; effective influencing and negotiating skills are essential as you will deal with people at senior levels within industry, local communities, partner organisations and other interested groups.
The post sits within the North East Area Installations Team and can be based at either Teesdale House, Darlington or Tyneside House, Newcastle upon Tyne. Our area includes the Tees Valley process industry complex, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Durham.
We regulate a wide range of sectors including Chemicals, Incineration, Combustion, Metals, Paper & Pulp, Hazardous Waste Treatment and Food & Drink, along with sites under the Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations.
You will be able to demonstrate your operational experience and knowledge of process industry ; specific experience of environmental regulation is desirable. You will have a good technical knowledge and excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate how you would apply the principles of better regulation.

You will be able to confidently and quickly deal with complex and fast changing situations by adopting a pragmatic approach to achieve the best outcomes for the environment. You will have a degree or equivalent in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline, and possibly be a member of a relevant professional organisation.

Experience of preparing for and responding to incidents is desirable, we work with emergency responders and other professional partners to prepare and respond to a wide range of environmental incidents including pollution incidents, flooding, drought and animal disease outbreaks.
This is a permanent post.
A full UK driving licence will be required as is flexibility to travel around the North East Area with occasional travel nationally.

A lease car may be provided in line with our lease car policy or, more likely, alternative arrangements can be made such as the use of pool or hire cars or personal cars if insured for business use.

As a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act, our staff hold a variety of incident management roles, including taking part in rostered standby for out of hours incident response.
