We are looking for an Evidence Advisor to join our Horizon Scanning and Futures team in the Chief Scientist’s Group.

You will be working to deliver futures work internally to the Environment Agency, with Defra group, and other external parties, in areas such as regulated industry, water land and biodiversity, and incident management. You will be intelligence gathering, developing futures scenarios, and helping the business to think about responses and opportunities for a more resilient future.

You will need to be a good influencer and networker, able to build relationships across the business and seize opportunities to embed futures thinking. You will need to be able to distil large quantities of information (data or evidence) into relatively short, focused, clear narratives, that help others plan, anticipate, innovate or take action.

Ideally, you will have experience using futures tools, and crafting products that inform developing strategies, or policy responses in a business or organisation, be able to demonstrate the application of your work, and have experience working with teams other than your own.
The Horizon Scanning and Futures team look at where we are now, where we need to be and what needs to change to make that happen. This includes identifying emerging threats and opportunities, scanning a range of sources, and helping the business to develop responses.

You will need to:
• be competent with a variety of tools and approaches including evidence assessment, data presentation, literature searches and visualisation techniques
• be able to learn quickly and work in subject areas and with people where you may not be a topic expert
• be a creative thinker who can accurately compile and analyse data and information to generate compelling evidence, combined with an ability to collaborate and deliver with others
• have excellent communication skills with the ability to draw out key messages and provide innovative ways to interpret and present information
• understand how evidence underpins sound decision making and is used to take effective action, including helping the business to develop responses to futures scenarios
Ideally:
• also have some experience of using Horizon Scanning/Futures specific tools, although we can provide training
• have rounded knowledge of the environment across several subject areas

Our work has little impact unless we can convey it effectively to those who need to know. Horizon Scanning and Futures work can be difficult for people to absorb and interpret. Can you describe a time you have worked to present complicated information clearly, or reworked a product differently to make it more easily understood and/or used by its intended audience?
