Your work will contribute to the protection of life and property from floods, the management of water resources, and the protection of the environment. You will provide hydrological data, information and support for Environment Agency operations and to external stakeholders. You will also be required to assist with monitoring, reporting, and analysing the state of the hydrological environment. This will include the production of both regular hydrological summaries and ad hoc reports. You will be expected to assist during environmental incidents; either as a hydrologist or by providing administrative expertise. You will be working with the full range of hydrological conditions in these areas; covering both high and low flows. You will contribute to maintaining our hydrometric data quality, working with others to maintain and improve our hydrological data.

You will use hydrometric databases, computer models, GIS and mapping tools to achieve these goals. The role is largely office based with some opportunity for occasional field work.

Most of your work will focus on the catchments of the South and West Yorkshire. However, you will help to provide hydrological support for the whole of Yorkshire as required.
The team provides hydrological data, advice and expertise for both Environment Agency and external customers. You will be one of six hydrologists in Yorkshire, and you will be working closely with colleagues in North East Area. This role directly supports the Area Hydrologist in Leeds. You may occasionally be expected to travel to our office in York. Your technical development will be led by a Technical Specialist based in York.
You will be a graduate or the equivalent in an appropriate science able to form simple conceptual models of the hydrological response of catchments. As this role is suitable to develop hydrological skills and knowledge you are not expected to be a hydrological expert.
You will be comfortable with using basic statistics and graphics to determine trends and relationships in numerical data. You will be able to communicate scientific information clearly and with confidence.
You will have a professional approach and the customer skills to ensure the right information is provided in a timely manner.
You will be familiar with standard office software and may have some previous experience in use of GIS or other mapping software.
You will have the proven ability to negotiate deadlines, manage your workload, and seek advice in a workplace.

Basic Check
Achieves Results
You will provide data, information and advice to a wide range of external and internal customers. This will involve working to deadlines and within a set of procedures. You will be expected to set your own priorities under guidance of more senior staff. You will also provide information for incident response to short deadlines. You will work with others , negotiating timescales and priorities for your own workload.
Multi-dimensional Conceptualisation
You will have the ability to interpret data, identifying trends and patterns. You will be able to use this to construct hypothesis which can be tested against information. This will build on your basic understanding of the water environment to enable you to describe current and past events in hydrological terms. You will be able to construct mental models of catchment processes to identify data sources used in characterising catchment response.
Focuses on Customers and Partners
You will be able to identify and address the needs of our internal and external customers; recording these where appropriate. You will be able to translate customer needs into specific data or information requests and to reflect this back to customers for verification. You will have the communication skills required to listen to, understand and respond to complex, technical, or partially formed requests. You will seek opportunities to enhance the reputation of the organisation by adding value to information, advice and customer service. You will have the tact, confidence and skills to work with difficult or demanding customers.
