The intern will work with research experts and Environment Agency business customers to scope and prioritise research needs, and to review the state of evidence for sediment problems in the water environment. The student, in discussion with staff, will be able to decide the focus and depth of this work from the following issues:

a) Sediments yields and dynamics in rural and urban rivers.
b) Impacts and targets, e.g. on salmonid spawning.
c) Contaminated sediments in estuarine and coastal waters - impacts and management.

The outputs are likely to be a synthesis of the science in one of these areas, and an outline scope for further research on a key issue to develop the evidence base for river managers.

This internship is available to current BSc and Msc students, and recent BSc/MSc graduates who have graduated within the last year.
The intern will be based in our Air, Land and Water Research team and will work within the Joint Water Environment Programme (JWEP). JWEP brings together the water-related research of Defra and the Environment Agency and works across the Defra group, including Natural England and the Forestry Commission, to maximise value for money and the benefits for the environment and people.
Applicants might have a background in hydrology, ecology or environmental science. They will need good communication and writing skills, and the ability to critically review and synthesise scientific information for a non-expert audience.
Closing Date: 28th June 2017 at 23:55 hours

For further information contact: Neil Weatherley, Programme Manager, on 02030254581 or by email: neil.weatherley@environment-agency.gov.uk

Interviews will take place in Wallingford between the 3rd - 5th July 2017.

The successful candidate can be based in either our Bristol or Wallingford office.

Scientific Knowledge
This post will provide you with an opportunity for you to apply scientific research knowledge and skills in a working environment. You will work in an applied research team, so the role will particularly suit a research student who would like to understand how research is translated into practice.
Environmental Awareness
The Environment Agency works to protect and improve the environment. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. Within England we’re responsible for regulating major industry and waste, treatment of contaminated land, water quality and resources, fisheries, inland river, estuary and harbour navigations, conservation and ecology and managing the risk of flooding. We are looking for a student who is passionate about these issues, and is looking for a career in environmental protection.
