As part of Field Operations you’ll be a valued member of a busy team, working alongside your colleagues on our river and coastal defences, to prevent and respond to flooding and pollution.

This planning role is mostly office-based. It involves preparing a programme of maintenance work on our assets, specified by our expert engineering teams, and organising its safe and efficient delivery through the field-based staff in your team or by contractors.

However, you’ll be encouraged to regularly get out into North East’s diverse surroundings, to physically see the work you’ll prepare and also monitor ongoing and completed work for safety and quality standards specified in your documented plans.

We act quickly to protect the public during flooding or environmental incidents. You’ll take part in our emergency call out rotas to respond as required; operating our assets such as pumping stations and barriers, or coordinating others responding to a more complex emergency.

This role is based at an operational depot. Although you’ll work from an office most days, you should also take into account the geographic patch you’ll be encouraged to visit regularly.
Our work takes us through different locations throughout the year. As one of the category 1 responders, we respond to environmental incidents both day and night.

We work with colleagues in other functions such as Asset Performance, Ecology, Environmental Protection and Community Engagement, to coordinate our approach to creating a better place for people and wildlife. We offer to work across the country when other areas are in need of assistance with major incidents.
have a positive, adaptable approach and a ‘can do’ attitude as a committed team player.
•be organised and methodical, which enables you to problem-solve to keep work on target.
•have energy and team spirit, looking out for and enjoying coaching others around you.
•be passionate about people, their development, and creating an inclusive environment.
•Manage and understand the importance of health, safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, as you’ll develop into your team’s expert in this field.
•need good communication skills to work with colleagues, customers and partners.
•genuinely care about the environment and serving your community alongside other partners in the field.
•be comfortable using IT on a daily basis including mobile technology. You might already have experience in construction/maintenance, health and safety or environmental work. Or this might be what you want to get into, as we provide full training/coaching for all our staff.
Technical Support for our online recruitment system is only available Monday–Friday. Late applications cannot be accepted.

A full driving license is essential.

You’ll be expected to participate in our on-call rotas to respond to incidents out-of-hours (compensated on top of salary).

You will undertake the role of a principal contractor and fulfil all duties associated with the role (training will be provided)

We aim to create and maintain a diverse workforce that better reflects the UK’s economically active population. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME), disabled, female and LGBT+ candidates who are under-represented across our workforce.

Please see the candidate pack for more information. Contact Barry Kelly barry.kelly@environment-agency.gov.uk with any questions or to arrange an informal chat about the roles.
