We have an exciting opportunity for a talented and organised individual to join the team supporting our Chief Executive Sir James Bevan. This is a fast-paced role which works closely with James, assisting him to lead the Environment Agency to fulfil its goals, including protecting and enhancing the environment and tackling climate change.

You will work in a small, busy team that advises James and ensures he is supported in all his work. This role is responsible for advising on and managing James’ external communication and engagement. This includes; organising and writing speeches, manging his stakeholders, commissioning and writing briefings, preparing his correspondence and managing his social media accounts.

You will work closely with our Chair and other teams in the Environment Agency and wider Defra Group, including our press and media colleagues, to ensure our work is carefully aligned, risks are managed and opportunities are maximised.

You will have the chance to join James during some of his engagements (such as at speeches or visits) and to pursue your own development goals within the wide-ranging work of the team.

There is also the opportunity to join the incident response team which supports the senior management during environmental incidents.
The Chief Executive’s Office is a small, supportive team that works together to deliver on behalf of the Environment Agency’s Chief Executive. This includes helping him prioritise and deliver EA2025, the organisation’s action plan to help create a better place for people, wildlife and the environment.

The team sits within the Governance and Engagement department. This department is focussed on supporting our senior leaders, handling sensitive issues, and engaging with Parliament, Ministers and key stakeholders.
We are looking for an ambitious and organised team player with excellent communication skills and confident working at a senior level.

Essential skills:
o Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially the ability to condense information succinctly
o Good political judgement and awareness, both in terms of government relations and reputation management
o Ability to build, maintain and influence relationships with key stakeholders at all levels
o A proven ability to prioritise work, deliver to tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities

Desirable experience:
o Organising and writing speeches
o Event management
o Writing letters and briefings
o Taking minutes in meetings
o Press and media management
o Working with Senior Leaders
o Managing social media accounts on behalf of others
This is a national role which can be based anywhere. However, you may occasionally need to travel, including some days working in London.
