We’re looking for a transformational leader in our FCRM Directorate. You will be our Deputy Director Engineering & Technical Assurance and will help lead the Environment Agency’s “Technical Authority” service, ensuring we make safe, reliable and sustainable asset management and engineering decisions. Your remit is Environment Agency infrastructure including Flood & Coastal Risk Management, Navigation and Strategic Water & Environmental assets.

Leading a team of engineering, asset data and assurance professionals, you will own, manage and assure the application of engineering and asset management data and technical standards. You will support the Chief Engineer in maintaining engineering technical resilience in the department and across the organisation ensuring that the Environment Agency has the right engineering skills and capacity to safely, reliably and sustainably meet its corporate goals and legislative safety standards. Your focus is Civil Engineering / Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA).

You’ll take responsibility for all our asset management and engineering standards and
oversee technical assurance arrangements to ensure consistent and effective application
of standards and our Technical Authority Framework. You’ll collaborate with and influence other infrastructure and standards organisations to achieve consistently high expectations and help achieve our goals through and with others.
One of 3 deputy directors reporting to the Chief Engineer, you will lead a group of 8 direct manager reports and a team of around 50 engineers and scientific staff, who collectively provide corporate leadership on asset engineering standards and application frameworks across disciplines including Civil Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control and Automation (MEICA) and Data technical standards, methods & specifications, engineering innovation, technical assurance framework, asset resilience and performance.
You’ll be a chartered engineer in an engineering discipline. Status of a fellow of an engineering Institution may be an advantage. You will be educated to BEng/Meng degree level and able to demonstrate technical know-how, in a relevant subject.
You’ll be an experienced and effective leader with proven ability to enable a diverse workforce to thrive and develop. You’ll have excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to Deliver Results Through Others: Harnesses the team to deliver results on time, to required standards and in line with organisational processes and procedures. You’ll have experience to effectively inform Government Policy and / or designs, implement and support an approach to translate policies into cost-effective operational activity delivering outcomes for people and the environment.
Your experience in Asset Management and Engineering Expertise will equip you to apply effective technical leadership and enable consistently excellent technical service.
