We’re looking for enthusiastic, organised, and proactive people to help us bring in over £350 million in environmental charges each year. This is the money that pays for work the Environment Agency does protecting and enhancing the environment.

Our aim is to improve the way we manage income and debt across our organisation, and you will be part of our drive to become more efficient, consistent, and easy to do business with.

Working with National Income Service (NIS) billing administrators and operational staff across England, you will be chasing late payments, answering queries, and solving problems. You will provide excellent customer service to both internal and external customers, and you will have good literacy, numerical and data collation skills and be a proficient user of standard IT packages in Microsoft office 365. You will be trained in the use of our internal systems.
Responding to incidents, such as floods, or pollution incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
The National Income Service is a relatively new service in the Environment Agency, bringing together four billing teams which each focus on a different area of the business. You will be based within one of the teams, and you will also work across the NIS with the other income recovery officers. The NIS sits within a wider department which includes a number of national services.
Ideal candidate will:
- Have experience of working in business debt recovery or accounts payable.
- Be highly organised and proactive with a proven ability in prioritising and managing a varied workload.
- Have excellent communication skills: the ability to communicate to a high standard in writing, over the phone and in person.
- Have the ability to work both on your own and as part of a team.
- Have strong IT skills, especially Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook, and be prepared to learn new systems and processes.
- Be experienced in data and information management and demonstrate compliance with data protection laws, internal policies and standards.
- Knowledge of small claims court procedures would be an advantage.
National Income Service is a dispersed team and so base location is flexible (subject to local facilities agreement). This is a full-time post, but we would welcome applications from those working part-time or flexible hours.

If you wish to discuss this opportunity or for additional information please contact Louise Milwain, Business Improvements Manager – National Income Service on 07768007539 or email louise.milwain@environment-agency.gov.uk
