As a Principal Permitting Officer you will providing technical leadership, but will not have any line management responsibility. This is a very varied role, which draws upon a diverse range of transferrable skills. Working closely with others, you can expect to be involved in any of the following:

• Providing specialist technical support to develop and maintain resilience across the organisation
• Determining a range of complex environmental permit applications
• Leading on projects such as permit review programmes or supporting the implementation of new legislation
• Representing the Environment Agency at public events such as conferences or public meetings
• Working with trade bodies

You will be joining the Bristol Installations team, offering support to 15 permitting staff in the Bristol National Permitting Centre, as well as colleagues in the other permitting hubs in Nottingham, Solihull and Warrington.

You’ll also become a key member of the Principal Permitting Officer Group working alongside the Principal Permitting Team Leader Group, to deliver installations permitting.
You are likely to be working closely with industrial sector groups, alongside colleagues from across the business.
You should have an excellent working knowledge of environmental regulation, including significant technical knowledge of an industrial sector e.g. combustion, incineration, chemicals, waste and food and drink. Knowledge of air, odour or noise emissions is desirable.

You will also be able to:

• Communicate complex technical issues to a range of internal and external parties
• Develop, maintain and share technical expertise to improve technical resilience throughout the organisation
• Influence outcomes by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with key stakeholders and parties who may have conflicting views
• Make risk based decisions in a pressurised environment often with incomplete or conflicting information
• Work individually and through others to deliver results on time and within budget and to required standards

First class communication skills are a must and you’ll also understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration. You must be able to manage multiple priorities and competing demands.
