The role
We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment, helping to ensure that people can enjoy it. We look after the water environment and land quality, promoting sustainable land management and helping protect and enhance wildlife habitats. We also work closely with businesses, enabling them to operate whilst complying with relevant environmental regulations.

You’ll join one of our national permitting teams in Water Resources and you’ll help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment. You’ll assess a variety of applications for environmental permits across the country. You will carry out technical assessments and communicate with customers and other environmental bodies. You’ll have occasional site meetings to deliver pre-application advice to our customers and will issue permits in line with relevant legislation and guidance.
The role can be challenging, requiring you to manage a busy workload, consider new technologies, unusual locations and environmental sensitivities. The permitting process is well defined and training, mentoring and coaching is available, helping you become confident in the role. There is the opportunity for you to specialise in certain topics and be in control of your own development and career path.
Environment Agency permitting teams’ primary role is to protect the environment and support economic growth through the environmental permits we issue. Additional areas of work include providing advice and guidance to our internal and external customers and supporting other functions at the Environment Agency, including flooding and environmental incident response.
You will work with a team of other permitting officers doing similar work, based at our permitting centre in Warrington.
You must have a geographical, environmental or analytical background. You’ll ideally have some experience in a customer-focused role and be used to managing multiple pieces of work to different deadlines. You will be interested in the environment and be keen to protect it by regulating potentially damaging activities. This may mean dealing with complex and difficult situations. You will be comfortable working to challenging performance targets.

Whilst relevant work experience would be an advantage, we are looking for you to demonstrate the following key skills:

• organise and prioritise a large workload
• time management
• adapt communication style to suit audience
• make sound and timely decisions
• integrate into a team
• competent with a computer
• be passionate about the environment
