We’re looking for a Hydrometry and Telemetry (H&T) Officer (Level 1) to join the H&T team who install, operate and maintain monitoring equipment which measures river level, river flow, groundwater and rainfall.

You will have an overseeing role in validating and quality assuring the data collected from this equipment therefore you will need good problem solving skills, initiative and an ability to use databases. Good knowledge and understanding of different datum's, survey methods and acoustic doppler instrumentation would be extremely beneficial for you to be successful in this role. Knowledge and understanding of our telemetry system would be advantageous with an ability to configure/programme a varying degree of outstations from first principles. The role also requires instrumentation fault diagnostics out in the field and remotely to maintain the telemetry network and data retrieval and leading on instrumentation preparedness for mobile flow measuring equipment.

The Hydrometry and Telemetry (H&T) team provides support to core telemetry, hydrometric and hydrological activities undertaken in the Wessex area. H&T delivers a vital service that underpins much of the Environment Agency’s statutory responsibilities relating to flood forecasting and water resources. We are a busy, experienced and well-established team made up of individuals with a variety of skills relating to the nature of our work.
We’re seeking an enthusiastic, practical person who enjoys working outdoors, in all weather, and has the capability to install, test, calibrate and fault diagnose complex instrumentation.

You'll also need to have an aptitude for numbers, demonstrate a logical and analytical mind, and be prepared to pay special attention to detail when it comes to analysing trends in large data sets. Basic electrical and electronics knowledge would be an added benefit for this role.

Other key requirements for this job include excellent communication skills, proficiency in word, excel and database management along with a passion for analysis and problem solving.

You'll also be qualified to degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline or be able to demonstrate competency through industry experience.

You will be working in and near water as part of this role therefore you will need to be comfortable working in this type of environment.

It would be anticipated that this role would require some travel, principally to field sites across the patch and other local offices.
