How would you like to work for an organisation that is inclusive, values your views and strives to improve the environment?

We are looking for Environment Officers to join our West Midlands Waste Regulation Teams that serve the environment and diverse communities of Central England.

You will be responsible for regulating a range of waste activities to ensure that these are carried out without polluting the environment or causing harm to people. On occasions this will involve preparing legal cases.

The role will require you to take preventative actions to reduce the likelihood of environmental incidents at permitted sites and respond to community concerns as well as supporting wider incident management such as flood response. You will be expected to have an operational role to help us respond to emergency incidents.

A high proportion of our work involves advising customers so it’s important that you have good influencing skills and can think laterally to resolve problems. You may also need to deal with situations that are confrontational. Good communication skills are therefore essential.

You will also have the opportunity to develop specific technical expertise such as the management of hazardous wastes.
We have vacancies in our Waste teams that work in diverse industrial and rural areas across the West Midlands Combined Authority, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire and Herefordshire.

We work as one team to deliver our priorities and outcomes;
• Tackling poor performing waste sites;
• Reducing the risk of waste fires;
• Providing incident response;
• Checking Hazardous wastes are dealt with correctly.
• Ensuring wastes get to the right place via the right people.
We offer a full training package supported by a team of highly skilled and experienced waste regulators. You will work towards becoming warranted to carry out environmental enforcement work.

You will have the minimum of an A Level in a relevant discipline, or equivalent work experience. A degree in a scientific subject is desirable. You may be a new graduate or looking for a change of career. Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment and making a difference.

You must be a confident and effective communicator, both written and verbal, who can influence and negotiate to deliver outcomes. You will be proactive, self-motivated and flexible to effectively work independently and as part of a team.

Familiarity with a range of IT packages and the ability to manipulate data is an advantage for this role.
The Environment Officer role is a career grade position; incremental increases in pay are linked to the achievement of defined training points. Training to attain full competency takes approximately 18 months and at this assessed stage, pay then increases to £28,785.

We offer a fantastic benefits package in addition to a competitive salary which includes.
• Opportunities for in-work qualifications
• Flexible working hours and flexi-leave
• 25 days annual leave (increasing with experience)
• Multi award winning Pension Fund

We are proud to provide our staff with a good work-life balance.

We may use the outcome of this recruitment to fill future vacancies within 6 months of the interview.
