Join us and help boost the Environment Agency’s scientific leadership on the environment, increasing our impact and influence on the biggest issues affecting the environment and society. The Strategic Evidence Unit works alongside the Environment Agency’s leading scientists, analysts and decision-makers to identify, shape and enable cross-cutting evidence projects on a wide-range of future environmental challenges, for example the next generation technologies that could help us meet climate change targets; the scientific revolution that DNA techniques offer in understanding ecosystems; or driving more integrated research by environment and health scientists. As a senior team member, you will help lead and inspire the team’s purpose and goals, helping build strong scientific networks and partnerships to enable us to work with others on complex, multidisciplinary environmental challenges and their links to wider society.

In this role you’ll undertake a wide variety of tasks, including:
• Designing new projects and building appropriate teams to tackle priority science topics
• Finding and exploiting opportunities for our evidence to have greater influence and impact
• Completing your own analysis on emerging topics to help shape future priorities
• Engaging with experts and other stakeholders to stimulate innovative ways of thinking
The Strategic Evidence Unit (SEU) forms part of the Environment Agency’s Chief Scientist’s Group, which provides research and analysis to underpin the EA’s regulation and advice. We have a forward-looking work programme, anticipating the next set of issues the organisation will have to contend with. This is an important component of the Chief Scientist’s leadership and influence, so you’ll have regular interactions with him and his leadership team.
As a senior member of the team, you’ll be passionate about the roles that evidence can play in solving complex environmental and societal challenges and are used to inspiring others. You'll have the ability and willingness to explore novel areas, get to grips with them quickly and draw out the aspects most pertinent to us as an organisation. You will have a relevant degree (e.g. environment science, engineering, geography, social science) and likely a PhD or similar. You’ll have good examples of working with experts and stakeholders to create and deliver projects with impact and influence You’ll be an experienced operator, seeing the big picture for our work and understanding the different motivations of individuals, teams and organisations that we engage with.
Interviews will take place w.b. 11th October on MS Teams.

Our team promotes an inclusive culture and welcomes all applicants, including disabled, LGBT+ or Black Asian and Minority Ethnic colleagues. Part time and job share applications also encouraged.

The host department may have further similar job opportunities. If you don’t secure a role at this time, but give a successful interview, we’ll place you on a reserve list for six months.
