As an Environment Officer, you will work closely with businesses to help them comply with their permit and environmental regulations, enforce the law and influence operators to improve their environmental performance.

You will play a critical frontline role protecting the environment whilst working within a team who deal with a wide range of environmental issues from permitted and illegal waste sites to more complex and challenging installation facilities ensuring their activities do not harm people, wildlife or the environment. You will initially focus on regulating waste management facilities. You will work with our team leaders, our technical leaders and our officers to provide an efficient and effective service to all of our customers.

You will carry out inspections and audits of permitted sites and produce written reports capturing the findings. You will sometimes have to take tough action to achieve these aims, and on occasions, need to investigate environmental offences. You may also be required to occasionally give evidence in a court of law. Your work will be vital to the protection of the environment and will be varied, challenging and rewarding.
You will be based in our East Midlands Regulated Industry team which regulates facilities across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

The team works both indoors and outdoors responding to environmental emergencies and incidents using a standby rota.
You may be good at dealing with difficult situations, a new graduate or experienced in regulation. Whatever your background, you will be interested in the environment, making a difference, using environmental regulation and sometimes needing to deal with confrontation.

You will complete a two year development programme and Environment Officer Development Workbook designed to introduce you to your new role and to help develop your capabilities. There will also be a significant amount of training provision including formal classroom learning and self-directed development and training.
The Environment Officer role is a career grade position starting salary of £23,196 which will increase as you move through the development programme.
