PLEASE NOTE – one position will be to support our Birmingham hub and require at least one day a week attendance to this office, the other can be based at any of our hub locations.

As a Principal Permitting Officer in the National Permitting Service you will have a technical leadership role, with no line management responsibility.  This is a very varied role, which draws upon a diverse range of transferable skills.  Working closely with others, you can expect to be involved in any of the following: 

• Providing specialist technical support to develop and maintain resilience across the organisation.
• Determining a range of complex environmental permit applications .
• Leading on projects such as permit review programmes or supporting the implementation of new legislation.
• Maintaining a high level of technical understanding in existing and new technologies and using this to increase the technical ability of  Permitting officers. 

You will develop and maintain good working relationships with internal colleagues in addition to external customers and partners. You’ll represent the Agency externally where appropriate and with consideration of the Agency’s goals and reputation. 

You’ll support your line manager by sharing responsibility for the technical ability of the team, making decisions on where improvement is required and implementing work to achieve this.
NPS work together across nationally and in friendly, helpful and supportive teams. You will be joining one of the Installations teams, offering support to permitting staff in your Centre, as well as colleagues in the other permitting hubs.   
  
You’ll be a key member of the Principal Permitting Officer Group, working alongside the Principal Permitting Team Leader Group, to deliver installations permitting. 

You will work closely with industrial sector groups, alongside colleagues from across the business.

Relevant scientific knowledge and work experience would be an advantage. Experience of environmental permitting isn’t essential; you’ll have some experience or interest in the environment and regulation. We’re looking for candidates with a genuine passion for the environment, who are keen to protect it by regulating damaging activities.
