We are in search of a dynamic and experienced operational leader to join our senior operations team.

This is a vital time to work in Operations at the Environment Agency. As the world grapples with climate change, species loss and challenges to water quality and supply, our work is more critical than ever.

We are committed to having a diverse and inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We therefore particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (B.A.M.E.), disabled, female and LGBT+.

You will:
- play a crucial role in leading local services across six operational Areas and over 2000 staff.
- set direction, ensure delivery and provide strategic focus for the talented and purpose-led workforce in these Areas.
- also lead one of the operational portfolios driving performance and assuring outcomes for people and wildlife across the country.

Your leadership will ensure we promote sustainable growth, tackle climate change and secure a better future for everyone.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. Please see the candidate pack for more details on this.
You will report to the Executive Director of Operations, and form part of a welcoming and committed team of senior leaders. You will be a member of our broader community of executive managers, and our national Director’s forum.

Your own team includes six Area Directors and a small executive office.
We’re looking for candidates with:
• Extensive leadership experience in a large operational business, and exemplary management skills. This includes translating strategic thinking into effective delivery via transformation, innovation and improved productivity.
• Vision, and the ability to develop your teams’ capabilities and empower them to improve the world around them. You will be great at working as ‘one team’ with colleagues across an organisation.
• Emotional intelligence, able to build consensus, and adept at influencing senior level stakeholders to make the best choices for the environment and people - whether out in the field with one of our operations team apprentices, or meeting with senior ministers in Whitehall.
• A strong understanding of effective crisis management and the willingness to learn how to manage national or large-scale incidents and emergencies.
