Life as an Environment Officer is never boring. As one of our field based officers you will get to be out in the county helping to protect the environment by ensuring the waste industry is acting in an environmentally friendly manner.

You will work with stakeholders, carrying out a full range of regulatory duties within the Essex area, in order to protect and enhance the environment.

The regulation of waste activities, such as transfer stations, compost sites and scrap yards, ensures businesses in the county know what needs to be done to prevent environmental harm. We offer technical support to help people work to industry standards, however on occasion a formal enforcement response is needed. You will receive training that enables you to hold a personal authorisation allowing you to collect evidence and investigate those who disregard environmental legislation.

As well as inspecting waste sites we also track movements of hazardous waste across and out of the country to ensure it ends up in the right place.

As a category 1 incident responder we are called upon to attend environmental pollution incidents such as fires, chemical or sewage spills and take action to minimise any impact on the surrounding environment.
The Essex Waste team covers a challenging and diverse area encompassing rural and industrial locations. We're a fun dynamic team who support each other in our work. We come from a mix of backgrounds and experiences and are looking forward to welcoming someone new into the team.

We are passionate about the environment and the role is really fulfilling. This is a great opportunity to help minimise the impact of modern society on the environment.
Every day can be different so we need someone who can think on their feet and adapt to changing situations. You should be able to work independently and have an ability to make decisions about priorities and appropriate action on a day to day basis to achieve planned outcomes.

You will mix with a range of people so experience of influencing and dealing successfully with difficult people in varying situations is a must.

You should have evidence of good communication and customer relations skills, be able to adapt behaviour to different people and situations whether it is talking to the CEO of a company about legal responsibilities or to a member of the public about a nearby fly tip.

We have a great training package to teach you everything you need to know and offer support and development through the role.
Although advertised as "Colchester" this role is based at our Kelvedon Office which is approximately 10 miles South of Colchester on the A12.

The grade rate is £20,234
Working hours are 37 per week- flexible working is possible.
A full UK driving licence is essential and a lease car will be provided following successful completion of your probationary period.
We, as an Agency, participate in incident response. If successful your line manager will discuss arrangements with you depending on your role and circumstances.
