There is an exciting opportunity to join the Fisheries, Biodiversity & Geomorphology team in the North East Area as Assistant Hatchery Manager at Kielder Salmon Centre.

As part of a small team based at Kielder Salmon Centre, you will be an integral part of the team. You will work closely with the Salmon Centre Manager, Freshwater Pearl Mussel Officer and part time staff on site, to provide: daily management and husbandry duties of all species; fish health and water quality monitoring; stocking juvenile salmon and other species; collection of broodstock; facilities management and legal compliance of the site; the highest standards of Health and Safety; deliver training and support to part time staff; lead tours of the facility and promote the work we do. You will also provide technical input into production and stocking plans, and assist with maintenance and construction projects on site.

Working in conjunction with other staff, you will provide 24 hour, 7 day a week alarm response cover to ensure fish stocks and the building are safe and secure at all times.
Kielder Salmon Centre is situated in a beautiful but remote part of Northumberland. Its main purpose is to rear juvenile salmon of the highest quality and suitability for return to the River Tyne, ensuring we meet our legal mitigation responsibilities for Kielder Water. We also rear Freshwater Pearl Mussels (and brown/sea trout as part of our strategy) to prevent their extinction from the North Tyne. On site there is also a newly refurbished Visitor Centre.
You will have a degree and/or have a minimum of two years’ experience in aquatic species husbandry, ideally salmonids. You will hold a full UK driving licence.

You should also have:
- Proven ability and experience in fish husbandry
-Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence a broad range of customers
- Excellent motivation and adaptability in delivering priorities
- The ability to build, develop and nurture relationships with partners and customers
- Good problem solving skills
- Experience in Health, Safety and facilities management

As part of the job package you will be provided with a three bedroom cottage adjacent to the Salmon Centre. This is rent free as part of your commitment to provide essential alarm cover for the site. You will also deputize for the manager in their absence. Some weekend working and flexible working will occasionally be required to ensure site and stock safety.
There will be occasional travel to our office in Newcastle for meetings and training. The role also involves field work across the area, and so a full driving licence is required. All Environment Agency staff receive training to support our response to major incidents.
