At the Environment Agency we protect/improve the environment, ensuring that it is cared for. We look after water quality, promote sustainable land management, helping to protect/enhance wildlife habitats. We work closely with businesses to ensure they comply with environmental regulations, at other times enforcing the law and making sure operators improve their performance.
As a Regulatory Officer, you will play a critical frontline role protecting the environment helping create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for people and wildlife. You will deal mainly with businesses who fall under some specific waste regimes such as Producer Responsibility and International Waste Shipments legislation. Your job will be to ensure they comply with their responsibilities taking enforcement action if necessary. Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment, making a difference and using environmental regulation to achieve improvements that are significant but not always visible to the general public.
The role is varied, vital and at times, challenging. You’ll be responsible for regulating a range of businesses to ensure they do not pollute the environment or cause harm to people.
The Environment Agency operates across England. You will be based in one of our Pan Area Teams, working in the regimes of Producer Responsibility, International Waste Shipments, Separate Collections and Material Recycling Facility Regulations.
You will work outdoors and indoors and you will also respond to environmental emergencies and incidents.
We are looking for people with various types of experience. You may be good at resolving difficult situations and/or experienced in regulation. Demonstrating the right behaviours is very important to us. We are looking for people who enjoy working outdoors and in an office environment. You should be able to show us that you are:

• pro-active, organised and able to prioritise,
• confident/assertive,
• IT/computer literate,
• comfortable with numbers as we deal with Regulations that require you to use arithmetic
• passionate about the environment and willing to learn about environmental regulation/enforcement,

And can:
• handle confrontational situations,
• adapt your communication style to suit others to get your message across,
• integrate into a team,
• record information accurately,
