It’s an exciting time to be in water resources planning. Over the next 18 months water companies will be taking some of the most important decisions in water supply for decades. Water companies will be making decisions on how they will maintain public water supplies for the next 25 years. These decisions on new infrastructure projects will secure water supplies for generations. At the same time, we must ensure these new options will protect and enhance the environment.

The post holder will assist in reviewing water resources policies that cover strategic resource options and will support the National Assessment Unit with the Regulators’ Alliance for Progressing Infrastructure Development (RAPID) gate process. The post holder will also support work on water resources management plans (WRMP) and regional plans.

The role involves working closely with experts in internally within the Environment Agency, Defra, Ofwat, RAPID, Natural England (NE) and Natural Resources Wales.
This post has confirmed funding until the end of March 2023 and is an advisor in the water resources security of supply team in national directorate of Environment and Business.
We set the direction for water resources planning including our statutory duty to conserve water through water efficiency and demand management. We lead drought preparedness and drought incident response. We advise government on long term drought resilience, future strategic water needs and management of public water supplies. This includes scrutiny of water companies’ statutory water resources management plans and drought plans. Our outcome is to ensure there are secure water supplies and a protected environment.
We are looking for someone with a good technical understanding of water resources, however this is an opportunity to learn. We would be very interested in hearing from you if you have some or all of the following experience:

• Technical experience of water company drought planning, regional plans and/or water resources management plans
• Wider technical experience of water resources such as licensing, environmental regulation or sustainable abstraction
• Building, maintaining and maximising relationships with internal colleagues and regulators
• Project management
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• An excellent track record of achieving results
This role is an assignment/fixed term contract based on a 37 hour week up to 31 March 2023.
