Are you passionate about Geomorphology and the multiple benefits that working with natural processes can offer?

This is a fantastic opportunity to work within the national Geomorphology team to promote and embed working with natural processes and nature-based solutions.

This post has a particular focus on the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management work, looking for and acting on opportunities to embed geomorphological principles across our operational work. You will be providing technical advice on how working with natural processes can support the delivery of flood risk management and environmental outcomes in line with the Water Framework Directive and 25 Year Environment Plan.

The role is varied and involves:
• Shaping internal policies and processes;
• Providing advice to colleagues, government and external customers;
• Gathering data/information to evidence the benefits of working with natural processes;
• Technical support to national projects/initiatives.

There is some scope for the role to be tailored to the skills and experience of the successful candidate.

Some of your work will be pre-planned and long-term, some will be reactive and delivered to strict deadlines. You will be well-organised and flexible to meet changing needs of our business, adapting as priorities shift with emerging issues.
We are the national Geomorphology team, part of the Environment and Business directorate. We are a close-knit and friendly team of 8 staff, dispersed at offices across the country. We are a highly technical team, respected for our pragmatic approach and willingness to support the work of others.

We lead for the Geomorphology profession within the Environment Agency, helping to shape the work of a number of teams across our organisation.
We are looking for:

• A team player – you will enjoy collaborative working, be flexible, happy to support colleagues and motivated to share your own skills;
• Strong applied geomorphology skills and experience (fluvial or coastal). You will have a comprehensive understanding of the benefits that working with natural processes can offer;
• A persuasive individual – you will be able to persuade others with compelling evidence-based information, comfortable in building networks and relationships and spotting and seizing opportunities;
• A confident communicator – you’ll be able to translate complex technical issues into pragmatic, clear and compelling policy support and operational guidance;
• A positive and proactive individual – you will persevere where others might falter to ensure that the job gets done.

We would welcome:

• An understanding of the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management activities;
• An understanding of geomorphological responses to climate change.
Closing Date: 28th April 2019 at 23:55 hours

This is a fixed-term role with an end date of 23 September 2020.

You will be working in a dispersed national team. There will be some travel involved and potentially some overnight stays.

This is an office-based job but there will be some opportunities to get out on site with operational colleagues. You will be encouraged to support incident response work, in line with your skills and experience.

Flexible working patterns are supported.

Location is flexible but Warrington, Leeds, Shrewsbury, Welwyn Garden City or Exeter preferred.

Please contact Lucy James for further details on 02030250800.

Interviews will be held on 15 /16 May 2019 in Warrington.
