We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. We work with government, local councils, businesses, civil society groups and communities to make our environment a better place for people and wildlife.

All our work is supported by data. It informs decisions and influences actions - for ourselves and those we work with. Working in the corporate data management function, you will directly improve how we operate and how we make the environment a better place

You will manage a small, expert team with a particular focus on managing and developing Defra's MetaData Catalogue, engaging with data managers from across the Defra network to ensure the service meets all user needs.

With an in depth background in data management, you will also use your expertise to help shape the direction of our current data sharing systems, and identify and move us towards what we will need to deliver in the future. Key to this will be how we make our data interoperable with that of others, including the role that registries, core reference data and code lists.
The Data Sharing & Access team is part of our Data & Systems function. It sits within our Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate, but provides corporate cross-cutting services to the Environment Agency and Defra. We are a national team providing technical services, advice and guidance to share our data and information in line with legislative requirements. We support the business to deliver their outcomes and lead the Defra Group in Data Sharing Services.
You are confident in leading an expert team with a range of technical data skills carrying out a variety of activities. You have a proven track record of effective implementation and can balance efficiency and pragmatism against the risks of getting it wrong. You are forward thinking, innovative and use your network of contacts to keep up to date with developments in data management.

You will back this up with in-depth experience and understanding of how data is created, processed and used; a good understanding of the business of the Environment Agency; and personal experience of what it takes to deliver outcomes in a large Public Sector body.
