Under the Environment Agency’s Strategic Monitoring Review, we are looking to define affordable options for a future sentinel (long term) monitoring network in estuarine and coastal waters for implementation from April 2018.
The successful intern would help to:
• explore innovative statistical assessments to consider the evidence that we have collected to date and how this can inform decisions on the future redesign
• assess the applicability of using new monitoring techniques and delivery mechanisms
• communicate key messages to the marine community
This internship would offer a unique insight in to the work of the Environment Agency (EA) in England’s estuaries and coasts. Not only in terms of the policy requirements of the work but also covering the practical aspects of monitoring of our near-shore waters.
This internship is available to current BSc and Msc students, and recent BSc/MSc graduates who have graduated within the last year.
The Monitoring Strategy (MS) team devises, and oversees the delivery of, an affordable monitoring programme which meets the EA’s needs in order to manage the water environment. Our team covers both surface water (rivers, lakes, estuaries, coasts) and groundwater monitoring.
The MS team sits within the Environment and Business Directorate, and works closely with the Estuarine and Coastal Monitoring and Assessment Service (ECMAS) within the Operations Directorate to deliver a high standard of marine evidence.
We are looking for an individual with very strong data skills who has a background in/or keen interest in marine science.
Comfortable working with the manipulation and analysis of large data sets using Excel and ACCESS.
Comfortable with statistical methodologies and use of statistical analysis software such PRIMER. Working knowledge of R is advantageous.
GIS skills preferred.

Scientific Knowledge
This post requires an enquiring mind to investigate the evidence that the EA has gathered to date and consider how our data collection could be improved to face the marine management issues of the future. A background knowledge of estuarine and coastal systems will help with the understanding of ‘what the numbers mean’ in the real world. An understanding of current and potential future pressures on our water environment will help with the direction of the work.
Environmental Awareness
The Environment Agency works to protect and improve the environment. Acting to reduce the impacts of a changing climate on people and wildlife is at the heart of everything we do. Within England we’re responsible for regulating major industry and waste, treatment of contaminated land, water quality and resources, fisheries, inland river, estuary and harbour navigations, conservation and ecology and managing the risk of flooding. We are looking for a student who is passionate about these issues, and is looking for a career in environmental protection.
