We’re looking for a new asset inspector to join our Thames tidal walls and embankments asset performance team. You will be responsible for making site assessments to enable you to record the condition of the flood defence walls and embankments on the tidal River Thames.
You will work with riverside land owners to make sure they comply with planning and permitting conditions and you will work with others to take enforcement action when owners do not fulfil their legal obligations.
This role is vital to ensure that the defences continue to protect London from flooding now and in the future. It is a great opportunity for you to work in the asset management and civil engineering sectors and to help the Environment Agency protect London and the Thames Estuary from tidal flooding.
Travel is an essential part of the role as inspections are completed from the land, the shoreline and by boat. This role involves being on a standby rota and responding to incidents caused by tidal flooding.
The Thames tidal walls and embankments asset performance team manage over 3,000 flood defences that, together with the Thames Barrier, protect London from tidal flooding. Our defences are located on the banks of the Thames and its tributaries from Rainham and Erith to Teddington Lock.
The team are able to use specific legislation to enforce flood defence maintenance and construction by riverside owners. We also carry out our own flood defence repair and improvement projects.
We are looking for someone with knowledge of engineering principles to enable them to assess the condition of structures in accordance with national guidance and standards. Your skills will also allow you to assess the impact of developments on flood defences. You will be qualified to degree standard (or equivalent) in a civil engineering discipline, or have sufficient experience to work at an equivalent level. You will have strong communication skills to enable positive conversations with flood defence owners to ensure they maintain their defences and to prevent defences from being damaged.

You must be able to work safely and productively on your own and be able to assess the risks posed by working in remote and potentially hazardous environments. You will also need to be able to use mobile technology to record your asset inspections.
Closing Date: 3rd July 2017 at 23:55 hours

Counter terrorism security clearance (CTC) is required to work from the Thames Barrier. CRC - Basic Disclosure checks will also be carried out.

This role is based at the Thames Barrier, London but asset inspections are site based. You must have a full UK driving licence for this role.
The role qualifies for the Environment Agency’s lease car scheme.
