Do you want to work for an organisation that values difference and includes everyone? Then the Environment Agency is the organisation for you! We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities for everyone. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share.

Groundwater is vital for maintaining the health of rivers, wetlands and essential for industrial, agricultural and private water supply. This role is an exciting opportunity for a technical specialist in Groundwater and Contaminated Land to contribute to protecting and enhancing valuable groundwater resource through the construction of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
Government initiatives for an accelerated delivery of key infrastructure, and for development that will meet the current and future needs for UK energy supply, will mean a significant increase in Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) consultations.

We offer specialist advice on NSIPs to the Planning Inspectorate and Local Planning Authorities. By providing expert groundwater and land quality technical advice and a regulatory steer you will help accelerate delivery of vital infrastructure. Working with key stakeholders and their technical representatives, you’ll build trusted working relationships and influence planning decisions. Your goal is to ensure groundwater and land contamination risks are considered and managed.

The Environment Agency is a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004. This vacancy also guarantees an incident response role to assist with management of any incident that requires a structured approach working together with partner agencies to protect the public and the environment.
Our new National Infrastructure team will complement and support existing Area based work on major infrastructure, allowing flexibility to face workload pressures as they evolve across the country.

As part of an exciting new way of working, you will help lead and develop a strong, supportive, dynamic and agile team working environment.
A credible and authoritative expert in groundwater and land contamination, you’ll have experience of delivering environmental improvements through others.

You will need:

• Sound technical knowledge of constructing and interpreting conceptual models and hydrogeological risk assessment
• Familiarity with groundwater chemistry and quality, and contaminant transport
• Knowledge of land contamination risk assessment and remediation
• Awareness of the technical frameworks and approaches by which land contamination is managed within England, along with relevant environmental regulations
• Skills in team work, influencing and communication
• An ability to work flexibly and respond to competing demands in a time-pressured environment
Knowledge and experience of the DCO process would be an advantage, but is not essential.
Everyone starting in a new role will be welcomed into the team and given all the training and support needed. As part of your comprehensive induction, you will be provided with all the equipment required for your role.

We offer an extensive range of employee benefits and the opportunity to progress your career with us via professional training routes such as apprenticeships and degree programmes.

Location is flexible, but you'll be based at an EA office which will be agreed with the successful candidates. However, we are adopting new ways of working which allows some flexibility working in both EA offices and at home, across England, with some travel / overnight stays needed.
