Being a Permitting Officer is one of the most important roles at the Environment Agency. As an Installations Permitting Officer, you will assess applications for a range of environmental permits located across the country, carrying out technical assessments according to Environment Agency processes and regulatory obligations. By setting appropriate standards during the permitting process, you will enable businesses to operate while protecting and improving air, water and land quality.
Your role could include working across a wide range of industrial sectors including; waste and landfills, food and drink, chemical and metal industries, intensive farming, combustion and incineration. You will carry out environmental investigation and assessments on the impacts of these sites on their surrounding environment.
You will pro-actively manage your own workload, seeking support and escalating issues as appropriate, to deliver high quality environmental permitting decisions to tight deadlines. To achieve this, you will need excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with internal and external customers. You must be prepared to have challenging conversations with your customers and be able to clearly explain your decisions.
The team has responsibility for determining Installations permit applications submitted to the Environment Agency. You will be joining an established team that strives to enable businesses to operate whilst protecting the environment. The work delivered by the National Permitting Service helps deliver the Environment Agency’s permitting and regulatory responsibilities.
You should able to demonstrate the following skills/experience:
• technical knowledge of at least one of the following sectors: hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, bio-waste, deposit for recovery, chemicals, combustion, landfill, metals, intensive farming, food and drink, cement and lime, paper and pulp, incineration, noise, odour, dust, air quality, habitats, fire prevention plans, best available techniques (BAT);
• experience in environmental management and environmental risk assessment;
• a degree (or equivalent) in a science or humanities subject;
• excellent verbal and written communication;
• confidence in your problem solving and decision making abilities;
• excellent time management skills;
• exemplary customer service and influencing skills; and
• the ability to work collaboratively with people throughout the organisation

Further desirable skills or experience:
• Experience of ecological or habitat assessments;
• Experience of environmental permitting or compliance
• Chartered membership of a relevant institute or Practising Environmental Regulator (or working towards this).
Interviews are expected to take place on the 4th and 6th of September 2019
The post is based at the Trentside Offices in Nottingham though some travel will be required to attend meetings and training.
