As an Assistant Scientist you will be expected to assist in the delivery of the analytical service to defined time, cost and quality targets by extracting and analysing environmental samples.

Although nominally you'll be part of one of the analytical teams you will also be required to work in different sections across the sites. This will often be at short notice and therefore it is important you are able to demonstrate a flexible approach, with the ability to learn quickly and work co-operatively as part of a larger team to achieve common goals.
The NLS Leeds is accredited to ISO/IEC17025 and the MCERTS Performance Standard for the Chemical Testing of Soils and specialises in the analysis of marine sediments and biota. The laboratory undertakes analysis for organic, inorganic, metal and physical parameters from a variety of sources.

In addition to carrying out the routine analysis of environmental samples you will be expected to comply with Health, Safety and Wellbeing standards, policies and procedures at all times.
You should be educated to a minimum of a degree level in a relevant scientific subject. Experience in an analytical laboratory environment would be beneficial but full training will be provided on the job.

You'll need to demonstrate the key capabilities as defined in the Job Profile which include; Team Work, Attention to Detail, Delivery of Work, Customer Focus and Communication Skills. Applicants will also need to be computer literate as they will be required use a variety of IT applications e.g. Microsoft Office.
You'll have the opportunity to work towards becoming a Registered Scientist with the Institute of Science and Technology as part of your development.

The role will be based on a 37 hour week working Monday to Friday using a Flexi-Time system. .

The roles are based at our Laboratory in Leeds.
