The deliberate mis-description of waste is a criminal activity and has been highlighted as a serious issue across the country. It diverts waste away from legitimate waste management and has great potential to damage and pollute the environment. As an Environmental Crime Officer with a focus on waste mis-description you will inspect and audit sites to identify cases where this is taking place. Using your skills and experience you will follow an intelligence-led approach to inspect and audit suspect sites to evidence offending, instigating remedial and enforcement action where appropriate.

Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment and using regulation to make a real difference, even if this sometimes means dealing with confrontation.

The candidate pack contains further information.
You will be in the Area Enforcement Team and work closely with officers from our regulatory teams and also with national colleagues. The Enforcement Team tackles cases of serious environmental crime across East Anglia, mainly focussing on waste but also conducting investigation across other sectors as required. You’ll play a vital part in our work to reduce environmental offending through robust enforcement and prevention/disruption tactics.
You’ll have experience of regulation and/or enforcement, ideally relating to waste management and a working knowledge of the legislation surrounding investigatory practice. You should also have some understanding of the motivations for waste crime and the mis-description of waste.
You’ll be comfortable auditing. Where appropriate, reviewing technical information and analytical data to identify if offences have occurred. You may be required to present the findings to a Court and play an active part in wider investigations into waste crime involving the mis-description of waste.

What’s important is you demonstrate the right behaviours to join our team. We are looking for people who:
• Are organised
• Can handle confrontation
• Are confident
• Can adapt their communication style
• Can build positive relationships
• Are a team player
• Are accurate and detailed
• Enjoy working outside
• Are passionate about the environment
