We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, driven and adaptable to join the Forecasting and Response team at the Thames Barrier. This is a shift based role providing a 24/7 forecasting and warning service for the tidal Thames. Shifts are 12.5 hours and include nights and weekends. You'll liaise with and provide advice to internal and external customers, often to tight deadlines and in demanding situations. There is also an element of solo working with the role, which provides an out of hours monitoring and alarm handling service for the engineering plant on site.
The Forecasting & Response team is a small (8 person) team, 5 of which fulfil the shift role. We are primarily responsible for developing, managing and operating a forecasting and flood warning service for the tidal Thames to protect approximately 375,000 properties at risk of flooding between Teddington Weir and Dartford Creek. We also create and maintain many internal operational documents and provide technical advice to a wide variety of customers internally and externally.
The role would suit someone used to working in a high pressured operational or control room environment. You'll be qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline such as hydrology, geography, engineering and forecasting, or have equivalent qualifications.

The candidate will be computer literate with excellent verbal and written communication skills along with the ability to work under their own initiative and make business critical decisions.

Experience in gathering, maintaining, quality-assuring and analysing data and information is desirable. You will demonstrate the abilities needed to interpret information and issue flood alerts/warnings and give advice regarding the need for closures.

This role is shift based and as such attracts a 20% shift allowance on top of the advertised salary. The role also attracts Inner London Weighting.
