We are looking for Permitting Officers to join our Water Resources teams in Ipswich.

You will be determining applications for a variety of water resource permits and will be fully trained and mentored to develop your skills. The role will be challenging, requiring you to manage a busy workload, consider new technologies, and attend occasional site meetings. You will issue permits in line with relevant legislation and guidance, to our statutory deadlines.

You'll technically assess applications to determine whether a permit can be issued, and do this, where relevant, in consultation with other internal Environment Agency teams as well as external organisations.

Permitting teams strive to enable businesses to operate whilst protecting the environment. The work delivered by the National Permitting Service helps deliver the Environment Agency’s permitting and regulatory responsibilities.

You will be joining one of two WR permitting teams in Ipswich, these teams will provide support, guidance, training and experience to you in your new role.
You’ll ideally have some experience in a customer focused role and used to managing multiple pieces of work to different deadlines. You will be interested in the environment and keen to protect it by regulating potentially damaging activities. This may mean dealing with complex and difficult situations. You will be comfortable working to challenging performance targets.

Other key requirements include excellent communication and customer service skills, attention to detail, proficiency in Microsoft applications, the ability to work well under pressure and as part of a team.

Whilst relevant work experience would be an advantage, it’s much less important to us than your ability to demonstrate the following key skills:

- Organise and prioritise a large workload
- Time management
- Adapt communication style to suit audience
- Make sound and timely decisions
- Integrate into a team
- Enjoy working in an office
- Passionate about the environment
