The role is within the Partnership and Strategic Overview team dealing with flood risk in Luton, Herts and parts of Essex. This interesting role will involve working with a variety of customers to help ensure communities and businesses are more resilient to flood risk. The work is varied and will initially focus on assessing flood risk activity permits and providing technical advice on planning applications. Successfully influencing planning and permitting is key to achieving good flood risk outcomes for people and the environment.
We are a busy department and workload can be high but very rewarding. Good communication skills are required for working with colleagues in other teams, as well as members of the public, consultants and professional partners. You will also work with your fellow team members on flood risk management projects and to support our professional partners.
There will also be opportunities to get involved in our incident response roles during and after flooding and other environmental incidents. Full training will be provided.
The PSO teams develop the technical knowledge needed for a strategic overview of flooding across Hertfordshire and North London. We are a busy team providing flood risk advice for planning applications, assessing flood risk activity permits and managing flood risk data and information. We work with partners and help to develop strategic flood plans for communities at risk of flooding. We are a supportive and inclusive team, with learning and development actively encouraged.
You will be passionate about the environment and use your knowledge and initiative to achieve sustainable outcomes in flood risk management. You will be a good communicator with experience of working with a range of stakeholders and communities and building good working relationships with them. A flexible approach will help you to prioritise your work and support other colleagues with key work activities. Knowledge of the Environment Agency's flood risk management responsibilities is desirable, as well as an understanding of Town and Country planning and how to influence good outcomes.
You will need competent IT skills, ideally including GIS. There are opportunities for training and professional development.

Some experience is required from a related field of work, for example engineering, customer engagement, geographic information management or projects.

Your qualifying experience may be gained through a combination of formal qualifications and some experience through to no formal qualification and a lot of experience. You will need to be able to travel to meetings, sometimes in remote locations.
An understanding of flood risk and incident management is beneficial. Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
You will be required to have an incident role.
